Joe began his geotechnical engineering career in 1990 after completing graduate school. He taught at San Diego State University and the University of California, San Diego, and remained closely connected to both institutions through ongoing service on their advisory boards. He later served the firm as President of Geocon Incorporated in San Diego.

Mr. Vettel succeeded Mike Chapin and preceded Shawn Weedon as Chief Executive Officer of the Geocon Group of companies, serving as CEO from 2010 to 2025.

His tenure as CEO coincided with a pivotal period for the firm. Taking the reins at the tail end of the Great Recession, Joe led Geocon with approximately 150 staff and revenues of about $25 million. Over the next 14 years, he guided the company through sustained growth, retiring with more than 350 staff and revenues exceeding $50 million.

In addition to his professional leadership, Joe contributed his time to community-focused organizations, including service on the boards of HomeAid and Street Stewards.

Joe looks forward to retirement filled with travel, outdoor adventures, and quality time with family and friends.
