Since the late 1990s Geocon has provided environmental services on the old and new east spans of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. We developed and implemented a Sampling and Analysis Plan to characterize sediments to evaluate aquatic disposal and upland reuse options for the bridge replacement project.  We further provided guidance and oversight for development of the Dredged Material Management Plan and performed in-bay sediment sampling along the new bridge alignment. Other services have included expedited pre-demolition asbestos, lead paint, and PCB surveys of the old bridge to avoid construction delays. We also provided industrial hygiene services to Caltrans workers and contractors performing weld and paint system repairs at the new bridge within permit-required confined spaces and to address worker concerns of exposure to airborne lead associated with grinding and torch cutting during dismantling of the old bridge.

Geocon has also been providing soil and groundwater sampling and analysis for the new Caltrans Maintenance Station, the Oakland Touchdown (i.e., where the new East Span meets land), and the Shellmound to Maritime bicycle pathway – all of which are directly related to the new East Span construction efforts.
