Alexan Universal

Universal City, California

Alexan Universal is a multi-family apartment complex located across the street from Universal Studios. The structure consists of a four-story building over two levels of subterranean parking. Geocon was retained to perform a geotechnical investigation and seismic hazard evaluation for the project. The site is underlain by a storm drain easement and is situated above and immediately east of an MTA tunnel. After careful analysis, it was determined that deep piles would not be necessary, and that a reinforced concrete mat foundation was the most cost effective solution for this project. The utilization of the mat foundation allowed the distribution of building loads which reduced the surcharge imposed on the adjacent MTA tunnel while simultaneously provided a rigid enough foundation system to mitigate potential differential settlement resulting from earthquake shaking. Geocon also provided groundwater well installation and sampling for the construction dewatering activities, inspection of the soldier piles, tie-back anchors, and lagging installation, observation of the excavation bottom stabilization, storm drain replacement, and earthwork and materials testing.
