2010 John Hoobs serving as CalGeo President
Geotechnical engineering is a highly specialized, narrowly focused area of practice that needs an equally focused organization supporting the profession and its professionals. CalGeo has been the voice of the geotechnical engineering community since 1971 throughout the Golden State and is the only professional organization exclusively committed to unifying, strengthening, and advancing California's geotechnical industry.
John Hoobs will be serving as CalGeo's 39th president for the 2009/2010 fiscal year. He has served on the board of directors for 10 years and has committed his presidency to carrying out the goals of the organization in unifying the geotechnical engineering community and serving the board of directors and its member firms. These goals include broaden its membership, strengthen its affiliation with ACEC CA and ASFE, expand regional presence, strengthen/expand technical training, improve effectiveness of lobbying, define and communicate professional standards, and build membership support for its goals. CalGeo is also a strong supporter of engineering student chapters at colleges that teach and promote geotechnical engineering. By sponsoring student meetings, professional guest lectures, student participation in the Geo-Institutes' Geo-Challenge competition, and promoting student presentations at our Outstanding Project Awards luncheon at the annual conference, CalGeo will continue to promote geotechnical engineering to students across the state.
